The term pairing in chess refers to the assignment of opponents in a tournament. The most common pairing methods used in chess tournaments are round-robin and the Swiss system.

Round Robin Tournament:
This is a tournament in which each participant plays every other participant an equal number of times.

Swiss Tournament:
This is a tournament in which players are paired in every round with an opponent with a same or similar score.
