Chess Wizards Fall Tournament - Birmingham, Michigan

On November 2nd, 2024, Chess Wizards hosted the Fall 2024 Metro-Detroit Scholastic Chess Tournament at Seaholm High School in Birmingham, Michigan. Nearly 120 students from 30 area schools battled it out on the board hoping to bring home a trophy. The Swiss-style tournament began at 9 AM with students grouped into three divisions: K-1, Grade 2-3, and Grade 4-5. The competition was friendly but intense! Students played four rounds with no-elimination with two tie-breakers to determine first place in the second division.

We're super grateful for our Tournament Director, Anna Wyzywany, who suffered an ankle injury during the first round but continued to manage the computer and pair students through the final round. Assisting her in the tournament were Chess Wizards’ David Cogswell, Jason Motely, and Robert Pastor.

In between rounds, Chess Wizard Taric Gheit entertained students with more chess and other fun activities. And Sabiha Sultana and Edwin Strode kept an eye on concessions making sure everyone was well-fed and hydrated!

We are so proud of our young Wizards and look forword to our next Michigan tournament in the Spring of 2025!
